Upside-Down Magic is a 2020 American family comedy film directed by Joe Nussbaum. The movie, based on the book series of the same name by Sarah Mlynowski, follows the adventures of two best friends, Elinor “Nory” Boxwood-Horace and Reina Carvajal. These young girls discover that they possess magical powers: Nory can transform into animals, while Reina can control fire. Their magical journey leads them to Sage Academy, a prestigious magic school where they learn to harness their unique abilities. Here’s a brief summary of the plot: Nory, with her wonky magic that sometimes turns her into a “Dritten” (a half-kitten, half-dragon), finds herself in a class for those with Upside-Down Magic (UDM). UDM refers to unconventional magical abilities. Reina, on the other hand, excels at controlling fire and is placed in the top class of “Flares.” While the headmaster, Knightslinger, believes that UDM’s unconventional powers make them vulnerable to dangerous “shadow magic,” Nory and her fellow UDM classmates set out to prove that Upside-Down Magic can be just as powerful as traditional magic.
